This is a 7 page lesson for a grocery store field trip, with one page of homework, and teacher’s instructions.

It focuses on:

  • Learning the section names of a grocery store / department store.
(canned goods / seafood / produce / household items / etc.)
  • Expressing products including their packaging.
(a tube of toothpaste / a jar of jam / a carton of milk / etc.)
  • Giving directions in a grocery store.
(Milk is in aisle 12 in the dairy section. On the left side on the 2nd shelf from the top.)
  • Describing the different jobs and work responsibilities in a grocery store.

It includes:

  • 2 activities of target vocabulary (Teach before the grocery store field trip).
  • 4 Activities to practice speaking the target language (During the grocery store field trip).
  • 4 Activities for homework or as review in class (After the grocery store field trip).
  • One page of teacher’s instructions on how to execute the the grocery store field trip.

Tips:

  • The grocery store field trip and other field trips should be divided into 3 sections.
(One class before to prepare / One class to do the field trip / One class after to review)
  • The teacher should spend the field trip time questioning the students as much as possible to get them speaking the target language (Sections/Packaging).
  • This lesson leads into a cooking lesson very well. At the grocery store you can also have students make an ingredients list for a recipe.
