This is a 7 page speaking based lesson, with one page of homework, and teacher’s instructions with answers.

The target language is making polite requests using would like.
It is a speaking based lesson plan.

It focuses on:

  • Making polite requests of people using “would like” instead of “want/give/can I have” with both nouns and verbs following “would like”
(I would like a glass of water. / I would like to watch a movie.)
  • Asking polite questions to people using “Would you like..?”
  • Using the contraction of subject and would in polite sentences. (I’d like/He’d like/etc)
  • Learning vocabulary to help students order food in a variety of food businesses in and around town such as family restaurants, coffee shops, food stands, and fast food chains.

It includes:

  • One page grammar breakdown (Presentation).
  • Three Activities to practice speaking the target language (Semi-restricted speaking practice).
  • Three Activities to produce the target language (Freer speaking practice).
  • One page to be assigned for homework (Writing statements and a paragraph).
  • One page of teacher’s instructions on how to execute the lesson in class.

Tips:

  • Be sure to explain why using “would like” in a sentence is the most polite way of speaking.
  • Remind students that “would like” is followed by both verbs and nouns in different sentences but the verb form needs to be in the base infinitive (to go/to eat/to see)
(Ex. I would like to play soccer also. / I would like to see a movie tonight.)
  • Model the pronunciation of contractions with would (I’d/We’d/They’d) but caution students that “I’d like some pizza.” and “I like pizza” sound so similar but have very different meaning so they need to be accurate when pronouncing would like with contractions.
  • Take time to make sure students feel comfortable ordering food from food businesses by the end of the lesson. This is a skill they can walk out of the classroom and use right away.
